The Importance of Personal Accomplishments Beyond Work

This morning at the gym, I found myself deep in thought about my next steps. I reflected on all the connections I’ve made, the ones I’m striving to create, and the chaos that often fills the gaps between them. I couldn’t help but wonder why that one important call hasn’t come yet. As an overthinker, these musings sparked something in me—today’s blog was born from that moment of introspection.

It seems the world often prioritizes work history and degrees, easily overlooking the value of personal achievements and pursuits that exist outside of our professional lives. The experience and education is credible, but what about the aspect of a candidate's potential: the drive, creativity, and resilience cultivated through personal endeavors?

According to the Journal of Applied Psychology, employees who have fulfilling outside interests tend to bring higher levels of enthusiasm and engagement to their work, leading to improved job performance. So why aren't we looking deeper than just the resume?

It's a competitive world out there and it's easy to forget the value of our personal accomplishments. But think about it: the experiences that shape us outside of work are just as important as those job titles and degrees. By valuing both our personal and professional development, we open the door to greater satisfaction, creativity, and resilience - qualities that can make all the difference in navigating life's challenges. They don't just define who are; they enrich our contributions and make us better colleagues, friends and leaders.

Engaging in personal projects demonstrate qualities that can be as valuable in the workplace as degrees and work experience. For example, I’ve taken up surfing, embracing the challenge of mastering the waves. In addition, I am finding joy in physical activity. Putting hours in the gym, helping me build strength and resilience. I am growing both mentally and physically with both of these activities. Each of these personal goals is driven by my desire to cultivate a better life for myself and my loved ones, promoting health, happiness, and a sense of fulfillment that transcends everyday responsibilities.

Honor the whole person you are inside and outside of work. Recognize how your passions and pursuits enhance everything you do. And go after what you love!
